National Acupuncture Detoxification Association

NADA supports education and training related to the use of a specific auricular acupuncture protocol in addiction treatments to relieve suffering during detoxification, prevent relapses and support recovery.

NADA strives to make acupuncture-base, barrier-free addiction treatment accessible in all communities and to ensure its integration with other treatment modalities.

NADA is committed to ensure that the training of Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist meet clinical and ethical standards. NADA upholds a public service approach to the amelioration of the social plague of addiction.

Acudetox

Acudetox involves the gentle placement of five small, sterilized disposable needles into specific sites on each ear. No electrical stimulation is used. The recipients sit quietly in a group setting for 45 minutes, relaxing or meditating.

Understanding the principles of both Chinese medicine and substance abuse is basic to NADA training and philosophy. The combines application of acupuncture with counseling and self-help groups such as AA and NA enhances opportunities for success.

Acupuncture treatments for addiction is clinically effective, cost-effective, drug free and compatible cross-culturally.

Benefits

NADA's acupuncture-based treatment process has been shown to significantly decrease:

  • Cravings for alcohol and drugs
  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Relapse
  • Inpatient detoxification admissions
  • Anxiety, insomnia and agitation

Clients are usually surprised to discover that daily acupuncture provides consistent relief of cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Treatment is offered "on demand", which reduces conflict and facilitates counseling. Clients prone to anger and violence enjoy opportunities for inner peace.

    Training

Most states now regulate the practice of acupuncture. There are over 100 NADA Registered Trainers throughout the U.S. and Canada available to conduct workshops and onsite trainings of the use of acupuncture in the field of addictions and recovery.

Michael O. Smith, M.D., Director of Lincoln Recovery Center, continues to provide leadership in support of this treatment modality, offering consultations and trainings worldwide.

Lincoln Recovery Center in New York is the primary raining location in the United States, providing weekly ADS trainings. David Eisen, Director of PAAC, provides similar training in Portland, Oregon.
